Corridor (Backroom)

Ordinary Space, Unsettling Feelings: A VR Study of My Apartment Hallway” For this VR project, I chose to recreate the corridor of my apartment building—a space that evokes an uncanny sense of unease, particularly at night. As someone who dislikes horror films and eerie atmospheres, walking down this corridor often felt like stepping into the liminal world of the backrooms—normal yet profoundly unsettling. I employed 3D scanning to capture the nocturnal appearance of the corridor and crafted an experience that allows viewers to slowly traverse the lengthy hallway. Visually, everything appears ordinary, but the ambiance induces psychological tension. I overlaid ambient sounds frequently heard at home—clinking dishes, doors opening and closing, footsteps, and muffled arguments—subtle traces of life behind closed doors that amplify the discomfort. The scanning process was particularly challenging. The corridor's palette, dominated by black, white, and gray, confused the scanner, resulting in overlapping layers on flat surfaces. Additionally, the motion-activated lighting caused inconsistent illumination. Due to network interruptions and tracking errors, I had to rescan over 20 times. However, the greatest personal challenge was confronting my fear—I could only scan in the middle of the night when the corridor was deserted, adding emotional weight to the project.
