Women's Toilet Crisis
My inspiration comes from a startling experience in a women's toilet at a hospital in China, where the walls were covered with advertisements for egg selling. I realized that illegal and targeted advertisements in women's toilets are a global issue. Often, walls covered with ads, flyers, and the potential presence of spy cameras turned what should be a private space into an unsettling and offensive public area. Therefore, my VR project aims to recreate the discriminatory trials faced by women, using immersive experiences to echo their plight. Effectively conveying this complex social issue is a challenge. I choose to begin with the question, "Do you look around every time you enter a public toilet?" to provoke empathy and introduce the women's toilet crisis. As viewers navigate through the entire toilet space, they experience three main concerns: egg donation, sugar dating, and spy cameras, each presented in separate stalls. Given that the advertisements I use are in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and English, I invite different women to portray victims, judges, researchers, and feminist activists to ensure audience comprehension of the ad contents. Their testimonies also articulate the global issue from various perspectives. To avoid audio interference between different sound sources, I utilize the "fake spatial" sound effect in STYLY for localized VoiceOver looping and smooth volume decreases between zones.
